Russia at War?

Posted on August 08, 2008 by The Editors. There are 4 Comments

There’s a lot of news coming out of Russia today.

From the article:

Russian and Georgian military forces clashed in the separatist province of South Ossetia on Friday, with Russian tanks and troops pushing in after a Georgian assault on the disputed area.

Russia, which has peacekeeping troops in the area, said it was coming to the defense of its citizens, who it says were threatened by Georgian aircraft, tanks and artillery. Georgia’s president, meanwhile, said the two countries were at war, and called on the U.S. to back up its support of a nation that is vying to become a member of NATO.

Ed Morrissey at Hot Air has some good analysis of the situation:

South Ossetia and Abkhazia have been in limbo since they fought Georgia over their status in the early 90s, with Russian assistance.  Georgia has never relinquished its claims of sovereignty over the two provinces, and they have no international recognition of independence or of anything other than Georgian territory.  The Russians wanted a UN Security Council resolution demanding an end to the use of force on the part of both the South Ossetians and Georgia, but the US and UK vetoed it — likely as much for retribution over Russian obstructionism on Iran as for support for Georgia.

This war creates even more instability in a region that has served as a crucible for Islamist terrorists and nationalist militias alike.  Russia finally pacified Chechnya after years of war, and this violence could threaten the entire region once again.  It could also interrupt oil supplies from the Caspian Sea to Europe, which pass through Georgia as well as Ukraine.  Russia will also probably cut off natural gas supplies to Georgia in retaliation, forcing Georgia to find alternative energy supplies.

This could get very messy in a very short period of time.  If Georgia doesn’t seize South Ossetia outright quickly, then cooler heads need to get involved to push the Russians and Georgians apart.

To say this situation is precarious is a bit of an understatement.

This instant blowback will serve as a good lesson to those who thought the U.S is the world “Uber Power”. It discredist the air head theories of Francis Fukuyama with his fanatsy :"The End of History”, hitting him and the lame-duck President, the one who looked at Putin’s eyes and saw the wrong picture. One, a trained covert operator with excellent spycraft, the other, an indulgent, spoiled brat, from an elite family that in the words of one of N.Y great matrons: “Chased the wrong crowd” (this was a personal comment to me 20 years ago and I will not betray this confidence), he thought he can go mano a mano with the Soviets, not only verbally humiliate them but snatch a piece of their empire and bring it into Europe’s fold. It is obvious that Georgia is not only-not part of Europe, but Europe, eating of Russia’s hands, 45% of its energy supplied by Russia, cannot afford to get too clever with Russia. The missle defense in Poland, or the integration of X Soviets dependencies into NATO freaked out the Soviets, now we call them Russians, and this is a show of force. It sends a message to our President, and to Europe: “Don’t mess with us”, if the lesson is not learned, another showdown will be on display, with more force, and this is not a matter of fairness, who is right, who is wrong, it has to do with who is a player and who is prepared to put troops on the ground. Will the human rights groupies denouncing the U.S force the U.S into an intervention in Georgia? Do the unDemocrats want Bush to open a third front with Russia? The lesson is to mind one’s initiatives and words, it can be deadly and humilating to those who write, speak and design these mindless policies.

Can we say history has a way of replaying itself? Hungary, Prague, Kabul, Chechniya...etc...a show of force, right or wrong is what empires do when they get upset.  Unless one has superior advantages to force the other side to comply, it is good to moderate one’s agenda.  Georgia’s President may be right in every way but he does not have the power to triumph, even a small fry like Israel called its private sector to stop delivering military supplies to Georgia, based on the notion that Israel cannot confront the Soviets. The old Soviets are still in charge and those who thought that history turned a page have it all wrong.

On the money Jabo.  This world is ruled by the aggressive use of force.  Those who deny this live in a fantasy world.

Coalition of the wipms hears from Lavarov : Go jump in a lake, see latest news on yahoo-news-a.p/reuters dispatches, kiss Georgia integrity-bye-bye…

The most amazing and unspoken aspect of this entire move was the absolute and total capitulation be default on the part of th ephony pretender, the Prezident of France, the little Charlemagne, Sarko the great- he walked out of the Kremlin handing out Georgia to Russia, so much for his “Diplomatic Skills” (it used to be a tradition during the 19th Century, that a diplomat had to speak french. Today, speaking French means only one thing: We bend over!
