President Bush Calls Out Appeaseniks

Posted on May 15, 2008 by The Editors. There are 1 Comments

In Israel’s Knesset earlier today, President George W. Bush discusses the fact that some people think we can talk Iran out of their pursuit of nuclear weapons.  This approach to dealing with a murderous regime has been attempted before:

Apparently, this is being construed as a thinly veiled attack on Barack Obama.  How anyone can listen to this video, then immediately jump to the conclusion that our President was referring to Barack Obama, is beyond me.

He was in Israel.  This is a country that has to be on constant alert for an attack from any of its neighboring countries.  The president was speaking to a people that know the ramifications of not listening to direct threats and hoping appeasement will work.  President Bush was spot on and he was not attacking Sen. Obama.

UPDATE: Get a load of how the Huffington Post is framing this “situation:”

image

Now take a look back at what President Bush said.  Is there any way that you can go from that text, and quote him as saying Barack wants to appease terrorists?

And here’s Talking Points Memo:

In case you hadn’t heard yet, the president attacked Sen. Obama as a terrorist coddler on the order of the late 30s Nazi-appeasers in a speech before the Israeli Knesset.

As the president who’s probably done more to damage this country than any in 150 years, I can’t say I’m exactly surprised that he’d do this. But it really was disgusting, even for him.

And according to Will Bunch at Philly.com, President Bush ”committed political treason today.

Basically, the usual suspects are out in force making this a campaign issue, when it’s not.  And similarly, the level headed folks are framing this the right way

While you are correct in noticing the detail of President Bush not mentioning Senator Obama explicitly, the issue of engagement is without doubt a campaign issue.  The notion of whether the US should be on speaking terms or have some sort of diplomatic relations with a country such as Iran is definately being decided by voters.  Now Bush has interjected himself in the argument whether he intended to or not.  Bob Schrum menioned on MTP this morning that at first the administration was linking Senator Obama on background, but then changed to this current tactic of we didn’t say his name.  And that is where the argument as Obama would say ‘gets silly’.  It doesn’t matter whether Bush mentions Obama or anyone, he is talking about engagement, its a policy choice.  He says, through this speech, that to talk to Iran is appeasement, bad policy.  That it is tantamount to talking the Hitler in 39.  Chamberlanism, etc.  It is pretty standard fare for the President.  Nothing really new, except that the calendar is different.  The other interesting thing is that the audience, descendants of the survivors of the evil in europe would even let the President speak:
Is it time heals all wounds or as lennon says, time wounds all heels.
