Barack on Conservation

Posted on July 30, 2008 by The Editors. There are 3 Comments

John Hinderaker at Power Line has a great post about a recent speech Barack made.

You heard that right, folks.  According to the anointed one, if we were all to just fill our tires properly, we wouldn’t have to do the environmentally disastrous thing and drill in pristine ANWR.  Never mind that his math is inane and ANWR is a chunk of permafrost the size of a stamp on a football field that was set aside by Jimmy Carter for the purpose of drilling

Here’s John’s breakdown of the math:

Just for fun, I did the math. Properly inflating your tires can improve gas mileage by 3%. Of course, many people already keep their tires properly inflated, and many more are at least close to being properly inflated. Let’s be generous and assume that one-half of the total possible savings would be realized if we all inflated our tires properly; that’s a net gain of 1.5% fuel efficiency.

Americans drive approximately 2,880 billion miles per year. If we average 24 mpg, we use around 120 billion gallons of gasoline in our vehicles. If, through perfect tire inflation, we improved our collective fuel efficiency by 1.5%, that would be 1.8 billion gallons. A barrel of oil produces around 20 gallons of gasoline, so the total savings available through tire inflation is approximately 90,000,000 barrels of oil annually.

How does this stack up against “all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling?”

ANWR: 10 billion barrels
Outer Continental Shelf: 18 billion barrels (estimated; the actual total is undoubtedly much higher, since exploration has been banned)
Oil shale: 1 trillion barrels

So, on the above assumptions, it would take only 11,308 years of proper tire inflation to equal “all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling.”

This gem falls squarely in the “don’t take Obama from a teleprompter” file, and I fully expect this file to overflow by the time the election comes around.  We’ll be here each step of the way.

The only thing that is inflated is the phony image and hyped story of this man. I would not trust my kid to take classes with this Radical not to mention let him inflate my tires. We can only thank the cheering and supporting media for not exposing the true story of this man is. perhaps the American people must have a taste of what the real Third World feels like with one Obama term, it could be rather refreshing.

Yeah, it is so silly that a presidential contender offer some sort of practical advice.  I mean, why bother as the guy states above, it would take so many years, in fact I am going to let a little air out of my tires so that I use more gas which would make us drill offshore more quickly and of course make all those that want to drill offshore all the more right....

Barack was not offering some practical advice.  He wasn’t giving it as a suggestion in addition to drilling for more oil.

He was saying that INSTEAD of drilling we should just inflate our tires.

That’s what makes this so funny.  That this freshman steps away from a script someone else handed him and he’s a bumbling buffoon.

No one’s suggesting that more exploration is the only answer.  But to take it off the table altogether is a terrible decision and the only case in the world where a country makes it illegal to take advantage of its own natural resources.  Now that would be shameful.
